Miami Wellesley Club Distinguished Speaker Series
The Miami Wellesley Club announces a new series of annual lectures devoted to women’s issues. The inaugural lecture will be held at Kroma Art Space & Studios on February 24th at 4:00pm. Details below:
Miami Wellesley Club Speaker Series will provide a forum to expand horizons and spark discussion about issues and trends facing women. Speakers in the annual lecture series will be leading thinkers and practitioners who have demonstrated through their life’s work preeminent stature on topics of contemporary importance facing women. The lecture series will offer a forum for original thinking, insightful observation and lively discussion that we trust will foster a deeper appreciation and understanding among participants regarding a broad range of women’s issues.
The inaugural lecture will feature Professor Ophera Davis. She will be speaking on the topic entitled: "Resilience and Recovery: The Hurricane Katrina experience for black women in Mississippi." Dr. Davis was a Northeastern University Women’s Studies Fellow and an active member of Wellesley Centers for Women – Post Doc Seminars. Davis was the American Counseling Association recipient of a Blue Ribbon Award for her work on Hurricane Katrina and Women. Her most recent publication, "Still on the fringes: Mississippi Black women survivors of Hurricane Katrina," appears in Race, Gender, and Class (2015). The first article from the study, "Southern women's voices from the Gulf Coast states on Hurricane Katrina," appeared in the Harvard Journal of African-American Public Policy (2006).
“We are honored and excited to have Professor Davis as the keynote speaker for our first lecture,” said Sonia Zeledon, President of the Miami Wellesley Club. “Professor Davis is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts in womanist theory.
